The Critical Care faculty at the University of Chicago have collaborated to create a multi-disciplinary Critical Care fellowship that affords trainees access to the entire scope of Critical Care medicine practiced at the University of Chicago. The clinical training program is designed to be tailored to the needs of individual fellows, but will incorporate clinical time sufficient to fulfill ABA requirements for Critical Care board eligibility. Fellows have the opportunity to participate in patient care, supervise residents, and teach medical students in many of the intensive care units at the University of Chicago Medical Center, including the Surgical Intensive Care Unit, the Medical Intensive Care Unit, the Burn Unit, the Neurology/Neurosurgery Intensive Care Unit, and the Cardiothoracic Surgery Intensive Care Unit. Up to 3 months of elective time can be spent participating in clinical or basic science research projects. A variety of clinical electives are also available to fellows, including echocardiography, radiology, and nephrology/acute dialysis. A second year of combined research or clinical training is available.
The clinical and non-clinical curriculum of the fellowship has deliberately been made as flexible as possible, to allow fellows to design a Critical Care training curriculum that will best prepare them for their subsequent career. The typical fellowship incorporates two months MICU, three months SICU/Burn Unit, three months CT ICU, one month Neuro ICU, and three months of elective time.
Board eligibility/certification in Anesthesiology is required. A curriculum vitae and three letters of recommendation are also required for application.
